The Taipei City Government has announced that all schools, both public and private, will be moving to online classes from next Monday.

City officials saythe online classes could last for at least a week for schools, but ninth graders and high school seniors could be taking classes remotely until the day before their graduation ceremonies.

According to Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je, the decision was made due to the large number of students whose parents have already removed them from school after requesting epidemic leave.

Ko says 19,000 students requested epidemic leave yesterday alone.

The New Taipei City government says it will not order schools to shift to online classes, but individual schools can decide to teach remotely or offer students mixed on-site classes and online classes.

Figures show that over 98,000 students have tested positive for the coronavirus - a majority of whom are elementary school students in the Taipei and New Taipei areas.
